One of the hallmarks of a narcissist is the ability to convince their victims they are 100% responsible for the narc’s happiness. Pets are masters at this with their cute, helpless demaonour and soulful eyes.
In the beginning the love bombing is intoxicating as they shower you with affection, and let you know you’re the best thing that ever happened to them. But the narcissist is fickle and there are always signs they don’t value or respect you.
One of the biggest warning signs is destruction of your property. Narcissists have a keen knack for desecrating your most precious possessions, but you forgive them because ‘they don’t know any better,’ or they ‘couldn’t help themselves.’
This is what the narcissist counts on as they reel you in and suck the energy out of your life. As their neediness escalates, you find yourself waiting hand and foot on them and ignoring your own needs. You sacrifice endlessly but as soon as someone more interesting comes along they’ll abandon you to chase after the shiny new toy. Of course they come back. Sometimes they’ll beg forgiveness, but a lot of the time they won’t even notice your hurt. They’ll carry on as if nothing has happened.
The narcissist hates to see you take any time for yourself. They may be in the other room having a nap, but as soon as they hear you ease yourself into a chair…
