This story underscores the problem with news reporting in the age of social media. I don’t think it can be reduced to a left/right issue. When raw footage is so readily available, and publications smell a viral story, even the established outlets are rushing to publish it without doing even cursory research. The people who commented on the story based their comments on what was presented to them. They trusted the sources and accepted the version they were given and shouldn’t be condemned too harshly for this, but this is a big wake-up call for everyone to be more discerning and also recognize what click-bait is doing to journalistic standards.
